Document delivery and interlibrary loans - DIRECT
What is DIRECT?
DIRECT is a service offered by the University of Sydney Library which allows direct ordering of journal articles from OVID Databases, which are not held by the University Library.
The requests are sent directly to a supplier called Infotrieve without library staff processing them and will be delivered to you by email or fax.
Articles from journals that are not held by the University of Sydney Library system (in print or electronic form) may be ordered through DIRECT.

How do I register?
To use DIRECT you need to have first registered for document delivery. You then need to submit a separate registration form.
Once the form is submitted, document delivery staff will email you the passwords for DIRECT within 48 hours.
How do I make a request?
- Go to http://gateway.ovid.com/ for Ovid Databases.
- Enter ID and password as allocated.
- Select database for searching.
- Search for subject or known article.
- Retrieve and display titles list.
- Check University of Sydney Library Catalogue for local holdings.
Note: you must always check the University of Sydney catalogue first before ordering, as Ovid holdings data is not complete or accurate.
The cost of ordering an item held by the University of Sydney Library may be passed on to you. - If the journal is not held by University of Sydney Library and you wish to order the article, mark box on left of title.
- Scroll down to Citation Manager.
- Click on order button.
- Enter order information as requested:
- It is essential you enter your initial and surname as one word, e.g. tchen, msmith.
- Select faculty or department from drop down list.
- Your email address is required so that you can receive a copy of your order request.
- Order source, i.e. supplier has been selected for you. Our supplier is Infotrieve.
- If you require a copy of your order request, tick box at bottom of 1st order page.
- Click continue at top of page.
- Enter delivery information by selecting your preferred delivery method.
If you select fax, ensure you have supplied a fax number and that your fax is available continually.
Unclick any items you do not wish to order. - Click order items at top of page.
- Read copyright statement and click I accept.

Infotrieve will contact you via telephone if there is a problem supplying the article you have requested.
What can I request?
The DIRECT service only allows you to request journal articles that are cited on OVID Databases. Articles from journals that are not held by the University of Sydney Library system (in print or electronic form) may be ordered through DIRECT.
Please check the library catalogue before making requests as items held by the library are unable to be requested.

How do I find more information about OVID Databases?
The University of Sydney has subscribed to a number of bibliographic and full text Ovid Databases. Please check the Ovid database Copyright Information by logging in and clicking on the information icons.
