Understanding Locations

To find items listed in the catalogue, you should first note the LOCATION and the full CALL NUMBER of the item.

A LOCATION includes the Library name (e.g. Fisher, Law, Burkitt-Ford) and often a sub-location, e.g. Research, Short Loan, Reference.

Thus, an item located at "Fisher Research" is held in the Research Collection of Fisher Library.

Other common locations:

SHORT LOAN: A collection providing course reading for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

RESEARCH: Material which supports teaching and research.

RESERVE (SR or CR): Very short loan (1-2 hours) collection designed to ensure the availability of books in high demand.

QUARTO and FOLIO: Larger books often shelved separately.

REFERENCE: Reference materials such as encyclopaedias, dictionaries, indexes and abstracts for specific subject areas are available in Reference collections. These are not for loan.

STORAGE: Lower-use material kept off-site, using storage facilities in Sydney and in Canberra.

AUDIO-VISUAL (A/V, MIC): Items such as cassettes, microfilms, videos and other material requiring special viewing or listening equipment. Usually shelved separately.
