Editing citations in Word

Once you have inserted and formatted a citation in a document you should not edit it directly. To format citations in the correct format either:

Editing citations

  • Open your EndNote Library and your Word document.
  • Highlight the citation to be edited by clicking it.
  • Click Edit Citation button on Word's EndNote toolbar, or Tools > EndNote X1 > Edit Citations.
  Endnote X1 edit citations button
  • This opens the EndNote Edit Citation window.
  Endnote edit citation window

The EndNote Edit Citation window lets you make changes to the display of in-text citations:

  • To add pages numbers to citations using the Edit Citation box, you first need to add the Cited pages field to the output style. Once the cited pages field has been added, add the pages numbers in the format you require, eg. p 5, or p.5-6
  • Exclude the year or author's name
  • Add a prefix or suffix
  • OK

Note: Only limited citation editing is possible within Word. If information in your citations is incorrect (eg. author, title, journal), edit the citation in the EndNote Reference Window.
