Creating Bibliographies
Inserting citations, footnotes and endnotes
To insert a citation into a document:
- Open your EndNote Library and open your Word file.
- Position the cursor where you'd like the citation to appear.
- Click the magnifying glass in Word's EndNote Toolbar, or Tools > EndNote X1 > Find Citation(s)...
- Search for a reference - you can search for any term eg author, keyword, journal title etc.
- Highlight a reference to be inserted, and click Insert
- An in-text citation appears in the document and the full reference is listed in the Bibliography which EndNote automatically creates at the end of the text.
Note: the format of the in-text citation varies depending on the output (bibliographic) style that you choose. See Selecting Output Styles

Footnotes or Endnotes
Once you have created a footnote or endnote in a document, you can cite references in that footnote or endnote just like you cite them in the body on the text.
Inserting citations into footnotes or endnotes
To insert a citation into a footnote or endnote:
- Open your EndNote Library and your Word file.
- Position the cursor, within the text, where you'd like to insert a citation
- Create the footnote or endnote in Word, Insert > Reference >Footnote or Endnote
- Position the cursor in the appropriate footnote or endnote
- Click the magnifying glass in Word's EndNote Toolbar, or Tools > EndNote X1 > Find Citations
- Search for a reference - you can search for any term eg author, keyword, journal title etc.
- Highlight a reference to be inserted, and click Insert
Adding page numbers to footnotes or endnotes
To add page numbers to footnotes or endnotes the Cited pages field must appear in the the output style. For most output styles the Cited pages field already appears.
