Getting started

The Travelling Library

The EndNote Travelling Library feature enables Word documents to be shared amongst collaborating authors.

When a reference is inserted into the text of paper, field codes are inserted that embed reference data into the document. EndNote uses this data to create a bibliography using a selected output style.

Note: this means that you can re-format the document using a differen style without having access to the original library. However, the document must be already formatted.

Endnote can also export the data contained in the field codes into a new EndNote library using the Export Travelling Library command. This allows a document to be shared between authors.

Note:

To Export references references from a Microsoft Word document to an EndNote library

  • Open the Word document.
  • Tools > EndNote X1 > Export Travelling Library. [Or use the Export Travelling Library button on the EndNote X1 toolbar].
Endnote X1 toolbar export to traveling library
  • In the Export Travelling Library dialogue box choose to export to either:
    • An existing library - select one form the drop-down list. or
    • A new EndNote Library (Enter a name and then Save].

NOTE: When you use the Export Traveling Library commands the exported references are renumbered and do not retain their original EndNote reference numbers. This means that when you re-format the document using the exported travelling library as the source library you will have check each citation before inserting it. Once this has been done, and if you keep on exporting to and using the same library name you should not have to do it as frequently.
