Using databases
Downloading amended Filter files to your PC or Mac
Some edited filters are provided by the Library in Module 3 of this tutorial, Using databases with EndNote. Using these filters will ensure your imported references require minimal editing. These filters need to be saved in the EndNote Filters folder on your PC. Other University Libraries also provide amended filters on their websites.
To save a filter file to your PC:
- Click on the appropriate filter file.
- The File download dialog box will appear, click on Save
- The Save as dialog box will appear
- Add .enf to the file name (if it is not already displayed)
- Save in EndNote's Filters folder on the C drive. (Double click on the Filters folder to open it)
- Click on Save
- Once the filter has been saved it will need to be made available using the Filter Manager.
To save a filter file to your Mac:
These steps apply when saving one of the Filters for Macs supplied by the University of Sydney
- Click on the appropriate Filter file from the list of University of Sydney amended Filters. Make sure you click on the Macintosh link as opposed to the Windows link.
- This will automatically download the file to your desktop.
- The .hqx file automatically turns itself into an .enf.sit file, which is a self-extracting compressed file. This then automatically turns itself into a .enf file, which is the final product you want. These three files will all appear on your desktop. Once you see the .enf file you can trash the other two.
- Open your hard drive and drag and drop the .enf file into the EndNote Filters folder
- Once the filter has been saved it will need to be made available using the Filter Manager:
- Open EndNote, go to File, select Import Filters, then Open File Manager
- Scroll down to the name of the filter file you just downloaded and click next to it in the Favorites column. This is neccessary to activate the filter for the first time.
- Note: although the filter file name is converted by the Mac to a .enf file you cannot use the .enf file (for Windows) from the Library's EndNote page - you must go through the process described above or your filter will not work.
To convert a PC filter to a Mac format
Macintosh users will need to convert filter files written for PCs to a format recognizable by Macs.
- Go to the Mac EndNote page http://mac.unimaas.nl/EndNote.html at the University of Maastricht. The information there is relevant to all versions of EndNote. The Maastrich EndNote conversion utility will convert any PC Filter, Style and Connection files to a Mac-compatible format.
- Download the file called this archive and decode it with Stuffit Expander or similar software. The file may decode automatically.
- Double click on the Endnotes.sit icon to create an Endnotes folder with the 3 applications create_endnote_filter, create_endnote_style and create_endnote_connection.
- Download the required PC filter and drop it onto the create_endnote_filter application in the Endnotes folder.
- Move the new filter to the Filters folder of your EndNote software.
