Using databases

Web of Science via Web of Knowledge.

Direct Export | Saving References to Import | Importing references into Endnote using a filter file | Filter File

Direct Export is recommended for all databases on the ISI Web of Knowledge platform. It can only be used when Endnote is installed on the computer that is used to search an online database.

  • Perform your Web of Science search
  • Select the references you wish to save by checking the box next to each citation.
  • Click Add to marked list at bottom of dialogue box on right.
  • Click Marked List.

  • On the Output option screen, select any additional fields you would like to export by checking the box of each required item.
  • Click Export to Reference Software.

  • Endnote will automatically open.
  • The Select a Reference Library dialogue box will appear

  • Find the required library and click Open.
  • The references will be imported into your EndNote Library. Double click on any of the entries and check to see if all of the information has been imported into the correct EndNote fields and is complete.

Saving references to import into EndNote

If EndNote has not been installed on the machine you are using you will need to save the references to disk and then import the references into Endnote using the correct import filter.
  • Perform your Web of Science search.
  • Select the references you wish to save by checking the box next to each citation.
  • Click Add to marked list at bottom of dialogue box on right.
  • Click Marked List.

  • On the Output option screen, select any additional fields you would like to export by checking the box of each required item in Step 1.

  • Click Save to File. Ensure Field Tagged is selected.
  • Click Save.

  • Choose a filename

  • Your list of references will be downloaded to your computer or USB drive as a text file.

Importing references from a text file into Endnote using an import filter

  • Start Endnote.
  • File>Open.
  • Choose a reference library in the Select a Reference Library window.

  • Click Open.
  • File>Import
  • The Import dialog box opens
  • Click Choose File and browse to the downloaded text file of references you wish to import.
  • Select the ISI-CE filter from the Import Option drop-down menu.

  • Select Duplicates option: Import all, Discard Duplicates, or Import into Duplicates Library.

  • Click Import.
  • The citations from the database should now be in your Endnote library. Check the imported references to ensure that the data has been imported correctly.
