Entering references
Entering references manually
To manually enter a new reference by typing it in:
- Start EndNote.
- File > Open > Open Library...
- References > New Reference. This opens an empty Reference window.
- Choose the Reference type from the drop-down list. The default reference type is Journal Article.
![]() |
- Enter the bibliographic data into each of the fields in the Reference window as required.
- Close the reference window to save it and add it to your library
- You reference will be saved into All References
The Reference Type determines:
- Which fields appear in the Reference window For example, a Journal Article reference type has fields for the Journal name, Volume, Issue, and pages, whilst a Book reference type includes fields for the Editor(s) and Publisher.
- How a reference is formatted in the bibliography.
Special formatting and punctuation of a reference [ie italicising a journal name] to a set style is not required when data is entered into EndNote. This is done automatically when a bibliography is formatted.
Suggestions for using reference types
- Use the Book reference type for books written by one or more authors.
- Use the Edited Book reference type for books edited by one or more editors whether they are books in a series or not).
- Use the Book Section reference type for references to parts of books (eg. a chapter, or one article in a published conference proceedings)
- Use the Conference Proceedings reference type for unpublished proceedings [Articles that are published as part of a conference proceedings should be entered as a Conference Paper reference type].
- Use the Electronic Article, Electronic Book, or Web page reference types for citing material from online resources such as an online journal or web-page. However, if the journal article or book appears in both on-line and print formats check with the style guide that you are using - most prefer the print information.
- Email discussions should be cited as Personal Communications, just like any other correspondence.
- Use the Chart or Table reference type if you want to include an image in your reference and later insert that image as a table in Microsoft Word. Images in all other reference types will insert into Word as figures, which are listed and numbered separately from tables.
