Using EndNote Online Search
EndNote's Online Search uses connection files to connect to a database or a catalogue, and provide an EndNote search screen which can be used to do basic searches.
This page uses the University of Sydney Catalogue connection file as an example of the Online Search process in EndNote.
Note: you will obtain different search results if you search the catalogue directly then import the results with a filter file, than if you search the catalogue with a connection file.
Important:
Due to the very basic search mechanism it is recommended that you do not generally use connection files to search online databases and catalogues. Online Search can be best used to search in the following circumstances:
- To search an online database for a specific journal reference
- To search the University of Sydney Catalogue if you need detailed holdings information to be saved for each of the references retrieved by your catalogue search. The holdings information consists of location, call number, and status at the time of search for each copy of a title held by the Library.
To use Online Search
- Open EndNote
- Tools > Online Search > New Search
.
- Scroll to and highlight the appropriate connection file for your resource.
- Click Choose
- If you are searching a subscription database rather than a Library catalogue as in this example, a password prompt similar to below will display.
- If you are on-campus or using Extro as your ISP, leave the login box blank. Click OK.
- If you are off-campus you will need to obtain the database-specific login by logging into the Library passwords site. Not all databases support password access so connection files cannot always be used off-campus.
- The Online Search screen will display:
- Enter the search keywords. Click Add field to insert additional search boxes, and click Any Field to change the type of search. Remember to use the correct boolean (AND, OR, NOT) logic to combine searches.
- Click Search.
- Click OK to confirm the search results.
- Select individual references to save to an Endnote library by highlighting each reference. Use Shift or Ctrl-click to highlight multiple references.
- Click Copy Selected to to select an Endnote library.
- Click on the name of the library to copy the references. Click New Library... to create a new library or Choose Library... to browse to another folder.
- The references will now appear in the library window. View the references to ensure that the data has been copied correctly.
