Glossary

Bibliographic (Output) styles are applied by EndNote to format references into the different styles determined by academic journals.

Connection files are used in Endnote's Online Search function to search databases and library catalogues that use the Z39.50 protocol. The Connection file connects EndNote to the database and the search is done using the Connection file's search functionality. Because the Online Search has only basic search capabilities this is not generally recommended.

Cited pages refers to citing or refering to a specific page range in a document or bibliography.

Direct Export describes a database function which saves your chosen references and automatically finds and opens EndNote if it is installed on your computer. It then downloads your selected references directly into your chosen EndNote Library. Not all databases provide a Direct Export function.

Filters let you import references downloaded (saved) from databases into your EndNote library. You select a filter during the import process which tells EndNote how to interpret the information you want to import. A filter does this by mapping the information in each saved reference to the corresponding fields in EndNote.

Import
Import is an EndNote function you use after you have first saved reference from a database search. You then import the references into an EndNote Library.

Independent bibliographies
are so-called because they are independent of, eg a research paper in which citations have been inserted. They don't require you to have first inserted citations into a document.

Library is the EndNote term for the files in which you store your references, in much the same way as you would put documents in a folder. There is no limit to the number of libraries you can create. Each library can store up to 32,000 references or grow to be 32 Megabytes.

Library window
The library window displays as a multi-column list. By default the first author, year and title are displayed for each reference.

Reference window
The Reference window allows you to view, or edit a full EndNote record, or enter a reference manually. Double-click a reference in an EndNote Library to open the Reference window.

Style files
determine the bibliographic (output) format of references in research papers and bibliographies.

Term lists are dynamic lists of words or phrases that appear in the references of an Endnote library. There are term lists for authors, journal titles, and keywords.
