Create an independent bibliography in Word

Independent bibliographies don't require you to have first inserted citations into a document. Use this option to compile, eg, a reading list. There are two main ways to create them:

Copy and paste citations from EndNote into your document.

  • Open your EndNote library
  • Edit > Output Styles > select your chosen style.
  select an output style
  • Highlight the references you want to include in the bibiography.
  • Edit > Copy Formatted
  • Open your document and paste the selection. (eg, in Word, Edit > Paste)

Export the references

  • Open your EndNote library
  • Select your chosen references
  select references
  • References > Show Selected References. To export the entire contents of the Library: References > Show All References.
  • To change the order they appear in: References > Sort References.
  • Select your chosen bibliographic style
  select an output style
  • File > Export
  File export
  • Select File Type
  Export to file
  • Choose Rich Text or HTML as they support styled text.
  • Choose Text if the file is for data transfer.
  • Name the export file and browse to where you will save it.
  • Click Save
