Running EndNote X on a University of Sydney Library computer

All University of Sydney Libraries provide access to EndNote. This FAQ section gives information on how to access EndNote on a Library computer. It also covers steps for ensuring that EndNote will work with Microsoft Word and that correct style files are installed

When you start EndNote from the menu on a University Library computer, the following screen appears

  endnote X public access menu  
  • To run EndNote , type E
  • EndNote will start, and ask you to either select or create a new library.

Adding the EndNote toolbar and submenu on University Library computers

The toolbar needs to be setup each time you use Endnote on a University of Sydney Library Public Access or Training Room workstation . This involves configuring templates in Word. If you have problems you may need to check macro security settings or copy template files via the EndNote menu.

Checking macro security settings:

Note: On Library computer workstations the macro security settings are set to Medium by Default. The following procedures are to be followed if this is inadvertently changed.

In Word, macro security settings need to be set to medium for the EndNote toolbar to appear.

  • Tools > Macro > Security

Configuring EndNote templates in Word:

These steps will make the EndNote toolbar appear in Word

  • Tools > Templates and Add-ins

  • Click Add
  Select Endnote X macro files  
  • Next to Files of type, choose All Files
  • You should now see a list of files including ENXCWYW and ENXCwyw.WordXP
  • Double-click on ENXCWYW.dot
  • ENXCWYW.dot will now appear in the Templates and Add-Ins window.

  • Click Add again and display all files
  • Double-click ENXCwyw.WordXP
  • Both files will now appear in the Templates and add-ins window. Ensure both files are ticked.

  • Click OK
  • In the following window, click Enable Macros (If you don't see this window, your security settings are too high. Check your macro security settings)

  • You may need to wait for a few seconds while a virus checker is run.
  • You should now see the EndNote toolbar listed under View > Toolbars, and the EndNote submenu under Tools

Installing amended style files for Endnote

Additional style files can be downloaded from the Endnote site or from other web-sites to the Temp (:D) drive of the Public Access workstation, and installed into EndNote.

To install amended style files from the TEMP drive (D:):

  • Download the style file to the TEMP drive (D:) on the Public Access workstation.
  • Double-click on the EndNote icon on the Desktop.
  • Type S to install amended style files

  • Type D to install amended style files from the TEMP drive. [Note: Words in file names must be separated by an underscore, otherwise they will not import into EndNote. For example, Australian_Dental_J.ens. You may need to rename the file.

When EndNote is started the amended styles will be available for selection in the style manager.

Installing Paleo files for EndNote

Paleo.enl is a sample library included with EndNote, which can be used for training purposes. To download the library to a public access or training workstation:

  • Type P to copy the Paleo Library to EndNote

Copying Term lists

Term lists are collections of journal titles and their abbreviations that are used to ensure the proper format is used when formatting a bibliography. Amended term lists are available for medicine, chemistry, and the humanities.

  • Type T to copy the Term lists.

Copying amended filter files (*enf) from the TEMP Drive (D:)

Filter files downloaded from the Endnote website and other university EndnNote websites must be saved onto the TEMP (D:) drive when using a public access or training room workstation. To do this:

  • Save the amended filter to the TEMP (D:) Drive.
  • Start Endnote
  • Type F to copy amended filter files (*enf) from TEMP drive (D:)

  • Type E to Run EndNote.

Installing the Word add-in tool-bar in EndNote

In EndNote, click on Tools, then Show Toolbar, and then click on CWYW/Add-in to bring up the Word Add-in toolbar.
