How do I insert a bibliography at the end of a multi-chapter document?

  • Open Word.
  • Create a Word document for each chapter.
  • Insert references into each document. If Endnote instant formatting is enabled, disable it and un-format the document.
  • Create a new Word document (this is called the master document).
  • View>Outline.
  • Create a Subdocument for each chapter.
  Insert a subdocument

  • Click in the Subdocument field.
  Click in the subdoc field

  • Insert>File.
  • Browse to the document that is to be inserted, select it, then click Insert.
  • Repeat for each of the chapters that are to be inserted into the master document.
  • When you have finished inserting chapter documents, position the cursor where the bibliography is to be located.
  • From the Endnote 9 tool-bar, click Format bibliography.
  • The bibliography may need to be re-formatted to match the font and type size used in the rest of the document. Use the Format Bibliography Layout Tab to do this.
