Creating or editing output styles

  • Open your EndNote library
  • Edit > Output styles > Open style manager
  • Click the output style you want to edit or one similar to the style you want to create, Edit
  • File > Save As. Name the new style that you are creating. Remember to add the file extension ".ens" and save it in EndNote's Styles folder. The original style that you are copying from will remain intact
  • Under Bibliography, click Templates. Each of the reference types that have been written for that style are displayed
  • Each reference type must be modified in a manner consistent with the new style you are creating. You can add additional reference types from the drop-down menu should you require them
  • Closing the Style window will bring up a box asking if you would like to save changes made. Click Yes
  • Options to change the way author names appear in your in-text citation are available under the Citation heading - Author names. The Author lists option may also require editing
  • Options to change the way author/editor names appear in your bibliography are available under the Bibliography heading, select author or editor names and author or editor lists.

Please contact your Faculty Liaison/Subject Librarian if you have any questions about creating or editing output styles.
