FAQ
How do I add a journal term list to my EndNote library?
The journal term list is a list of journal titles with up to three abbreviations for each title. It allows for the substitution of a journal title abbreviation where the selected output style requires it.
Endnote comes installed with journal term lists for:
- Humanities
- Chemistry
- Medicine
Additional Term Lists
There are two Biosis term lists available for download; the Biosis term list 1 , which provides one set of abbreviations without full stops, and the Biosis term list 2, which provides two sets of abbreviations, one with full stops and one without. Save into the Endnote/Term Lists folder.
There are additional subject specific Term Lists available from the University of Queensland Library. These Term Lists cover Medicine, Biosciences, Chemistry, Ancient History and Classics.
To use journal term lists you need to:
- Import a journal term list into your Endnote Library
- Edit the selected output style to use a term list.
Import a journal term list into your Endnote Library.
- Open Endnote.
- Create a new library.
- Tools>Define Term lists.
- Select Journals.
![]() |
- Click Import list.
- Browse to the Endnote/Term list folder.
- Select the appropriate term list. Click Open.

You should now have a list of full journal titles with their abbreviations. This needs to be done for each of your libraries, ideally before you begin to import references into your library.
Edit the selected output style to use a term list
If you have an output style that requires the use of abbreviated journal titles:
- Open Endnote.
- Edit>Output Styles>Open Style Manager.
- Browse to the required style, Highlight it, click Edit.
- Select Journal names.
- Select appropriate option:
![]() |
- Close the window and Save.
From now on, whenever a paper is formatted to that particular style it should abbreviate journal titles using the imported term list.
