Getting started

Moving your Library

EndNote libraries consist of a library file (yourlibraryname.enl) and a Data folder (yourlibraryname.Data). The Data folder contains 2 subfolders, and may contain term lists, images, charts or tables, or PDF files. When moving your library from one computer to another it is essential to move both the library file and the data folder to retain the integrity of your library. Endnote makes this easier through the library compression feature.

Compressed Libraries are indicated by a .enlx file suffix.

To compress a library

You can compress both files into one by:

  • Start EndNote.
  • File > Open... to open your library.
  • File > Send To > Compressed Library...
  • Enter a compressed Library name. [Hint: Keep the same library name.]
  • Save

A compressed library will be generated. If you are re-compressing a library after adding some references, overide the warning screen and click Yes to replace the existing compressed library.

To open a compressed library

  • File > Open > Open Library.
  • Browse to and select the compressed library, for example, yourlibraryname.enlx.
  • Open.
  • A warning dialog box may appear if a library of the same name already exists. Yes or No to replace it.

Warning: Compressing and uncompressing libraries may result in libraries being inadvertently being overwritten. Ensure that you are not overwriting a more up to date library.
