Problems opening or downloading PDF files
Incomplete and slow downloads
If you have problems with slow downloads, or downloads dropping out:
- Consider installing a download manager. See: Data Compression Utilities @ Google Directory
- Go to the Commonwealth Internet Assistance Program site, to test your internet speed and work through their Selfhelp Kit to optimise your connection speed. You may also be eligible for free compression software if your speed is less than 19.2 kbps.
Problems opening PDF files with Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer may sometimes give an error message or display a blank page instead of the PDF document.
- Make sure you are using the latest version of Internet Explorer (see the Microsoft web site) preferably with all the current patches and updates applied.
- If the problem persists, see the workaround below.
Alternatively, you can try using an alternative web browser such as Firefox, Netscape, Mozilla or Opera, none of which have this problem with displaying PDF files.
Workaround for Internet Explorer:
Set up Adobe Acrobat reader so that it opens as a helper application in a separate window rather than in your browser window:
1. Close Internet Explorer.
2. Open Acrobat Reader independently. (Start > Programs > Acrobat Reader)
3. Edit > Preferences
4. Depending which version you are using:
Acrobat 7: select Internet from the side menu > uncheck Display PDF in Browser. Ensure the Connection Speed is set at the correct rate for your connection. Close Acrobat.
Acrobat 6: select Internet from the side menu > uncheck Display PDF in Browser. Close Acrobat
Acrobat 5: Options > uncheck Display PDF in Browser. Close Acrobat
Acrobat 4: File > Preferences > General. Uncheck the box near the bottom right that says "Web Browser Integration". Close Acrobat.
The next time you try to open a PDF, a dialog box will come up which says you are doing a
File Download, and asks if you want
to Open in the browser / Save (to disk) / Cancel / Other.
Choose to Save the PDF - to the desktop, or the hard disk - wherever
is useful for you.
Notice where you save it so you can find it on your computer.
You should now be able to open it with Acrobat Reader, read and print.
Very occasionally, after having set up Acrobat so that it will open in a separate window, Explorer will not be able to find Acrobat. This is indicated by a small icon, pictured above. Advanced computer users can
edit the Windows Registry file, less confident users should
download and use Netscape.
Required: Acrobat Reader
As most electronic E-reserve items are displayed in PDF format, you may need to download and install the free Adobe Acrobat Reader from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html
Printing problems
Ensure Print as Image is ticked in the Print dialogue box if the PDF is not printing properly.
If you are printing a PowerPoint presentation with one slide per page, you can use less paper by changing the settings in the Print dialogue box:
- Click Properties
- Open Layout tab
- Go to Pages per Sheet and select the number of pages you wish to have printed on each sheet.
- Click OK to make the changes
- Click OK to print.
