Law Library Law Reserve is located on Level 8, behind the Information Desk.
It is a short-loan collection designed to ensure
the availability of library material which is in high demand.
Items held in Law Reserve are listed in the Library Catalogue. You can
search under Course or Lecturer name, as well as by author or title.
- Library material in high demand (such as textbooks, current law reports, photocopies of articles required for essays) is placed in Law Reserve and may be used in the Library for periods of two hours. Overnight loans are also available for some items.
- Please use the TITLE of the item when making a request (items are stored in title order)
- A student card or other authorised ID is required in order to take items away from the desk area.
- Up to two items may be borrowed at any one time.
- Items may not normally be taken out of the library
- Fines are imposed for the late return of items
Requesting material for Law Reserve
Academic staff should submit requests for placement of items in Law Reserve (along with relevant reading list) to the Acting Law Reserve Officer, Law Library, Kate Molyneux. Before submitting requests, please consider the following points:
- Please submit request as early as you can. More than 800 items are placed on Law Reserve each year and the processing of lists can take some time.
- Please consider carefully the volume of material and anticipated use of items you request. Each year a substantial number of books placed on Law Reserve are never borrowed. This restricts use of items when this may not be necessary.
- Almost all material is removed from Reserve at the end of the year and returned to the open shelves. This is to ensure that the Reserve collection is current. Material required for a subsequent semester must be requested before the start of that semester.
Multiple copies
The short loan period and reservation system make a single copy of any item sufficient in nearly all cases. The Reserve area is too small to allow us to include multiple copies except in exceptional circumstances. We monitor the use of material and provide extra copies if the demand warrants it.
Photocopies
Photocopies of journal articles are made for Reserve. Copyright regulations are strictly observed. The University's license enables us to copy up to 10% or one chapter of a separately published work (i.e. book) and a complete journal article (but not newspaper articles in their entirety as they are deemed to constitute a whole work)
Material not held by University of Sydney
Photocopies of journal articles can be obtained from other libraries for journals we do not hold, provided that a complete and accurate citations and sufficient notice are given. We cannot obtain books on inter-library loan to place on Reserve. Books not already held will be ordered. A lecturer's personal copy can be put on Reserve as an interim measure.
Teaching material
Reserve is not a distribution point for teaching material and we do not accept non-library materials such as lecture or tutorial notes, solutions to problems, course outlines or collections of readings.
Citations in Reading Lists
Items are arranged in title order on the shelves - please use standard bibliographic citation rules in your reading lists, as library staff need to be able to locate a particular item quickly.
Contacts
For any advice or assistance on Law Reserve policy or procedures, please contact Christine Hill Law Reserve Officer on ext 10221, or ask at the Library Desk.
Services for Post-graduate Students
Interlibrary Loans
Post-graduate students are eligible for
Inter-library loans, if an item is not held in the Law Library.
An ILL/DD Registration Form must be completed first.
Requests
are made through the web catalogue. Please check the Library catalogue carefully before making a request.
Although most inter-library loans are free, it is an expensive service to operate and we reserve the right to refuse requests. In particular, if you request a large number of items from other Sydney Libraries you may be
directed to go in person. Please contact the InterLibrary Loans Officer, Michelle Daly on 9351 0325 or
by email for more information.
Research Assistance
The staff on duty at the Information Desk can help locate information in the library. For more specialised assistance or to discuss your research needs, please contact or make an appointment with the Reader Services Librarian, on 9351 0293 or email: the Law Library
Study Carrels
Full time research students may apply for a study carrel situated in the Law Library. There is always a waiting list for these. Please contact the Law Library's Administrative Officer
