In this famous book Chatterton traces the history of the sailing ship in art, from the earliest rough woodcuts dating from the 15th century down to lithographs of the late Victorian age, when sail was gradually giving way to steam Arthur Macpherson (1873–1942), the son of a Calcutta high-court judge, had a passion both for the sea and for collecting maritime prints, drawings and paintings. His collection of over 11,000 items was acquired for the National Maritime Museum in Great Britain by Sir James Caird in 1928.
