Log of His Majesty's steam frigate Firebrand [front cover]
Dec. 1849 - July 1850.
Captain Thomas D. Knox. Kept by Thomas B. Legh, Mate.
The steam frigate Firebrand, built in 1842, was a paddle wheel vessel of 400 horsepower, displacing 1,190 tons, and armed with six guns. It has been listed as the first steamship in the Royal Navy and in 1845 it was part of the Royal Navy’s Experimental Squadron. Firebrand was to later serve in the Crimean War, but not under Knox who had died 1851. The ship was sold in 1864.
