This textbook is characteristic of the work of Ludwig Aschoff whose systematic analysis of autopsy and surgical specimens revealed many new concepts in pathology, including the definition of the reticulo-endothelial system. Aschoff was the greatest pathology teacher of his time; he had trained under van Recklinghausen, who in turn had trained with Virchow. As the Chief of Prussian Army Pathology in World War I Aschoff tried to undertake an autopsy on every German soldier killed in battle. He contributed an enormous volume of findings to the official German medical history of the war and many of the specimens were included in the Institute at Freiburg as well as in the Kaiser Wilhelms Institute. He described the nodes which are still given his name when studying rheumatic heart disease in 1905.
