Cullen's lectures on materia medica were given as a distinct course to medical students in Edinburgh. He also pioneered formal teaching in chemistry at the Scottish medical schools. Cullen was an outstanding lecturer and influenced many of his students to take an interest in the medical sciences, including for instance John Hunter and William Withering.
