Dioscorides' Materia Medica was one of the few medical books to remain in circulation in the Western world during the Dark Ages. Dioscorides wrote in his native Greek, but collected herbs and animal remedies from many countries of the Near East while serving in Nero's armies. This Latin version was published in Venice in 1538. Note that the plant classification is pre-Linnaen.
