The most interesting portion of the compendium is the last, on the spleen. It was contributed by Thomas Hodgkin (of the lymphoma) and J.J. Lister (father of the pioneer of antiseptic surgery). The authors were both Quakers who shared interest in the science of pathology and philanthropy.
