Gray and his illustrator J. Vandyke Carter created their classic anatomy textbook and atlas in 1858. It is now in its 39th edition and has become an enduring symbol of medical education. Despite his scientific achievements in anatomy and his election to the Royal Society, Gray perished unnecessarily of smallpox in an era when vaccination was a long established public health measure. He contracted the disease from a nephew.
