A Swiss polymath who trained at the University of Leiden under Herman Boerhaave and spent many years at the University of Göttingen, Haller is still famous for his work on the contractility of muscles. He was also an important botanist and a prolific but minor poet. He is credited with awakening European sensibility to the beauty of the alpine scenery which had formerly been regarded as ugly and threatening.
