Huxley's own scientific reputation was built on his studies of marine life during the voyage of the Rattlesnake. He became an expert on taxonomy and his ideas are presented in this, his most important book. Huxley was one of the scientists best placed to understand the ramification of Darwin's On the Origin of Species and he became one of the most enthusiastic supporters and popularisers of evolutionary theory. Nicknamed "Darwin's Bulldog" he courted notoriety as the spokesman for progressive ideas in general and agnosticism in particular.
