Francesco Redi was a member of the short-lived Accademia del cimento of Florence. He is widely acknowledged as having provided the crucial experiments which undermined the theory of spontaneous generation in putrefying matter. His book on vipers of 1664 was very popular and this letter reveals his continued interest in the subject some two decades later.
