Philosophy by the Book

BENTHAM, Jeremy (1748 - 1832)
Letter to Lord Pelham Giving a Comparative View of the System of Penal Colonization in New South Wales, and the Home Penitentiary System, Prescribed by the Acts of Parliament of the Years 1794 & 1799.
London: Privately published, printed by Wilks and Taylor, 1802.

This pamphlet, of largely local importance, argues the superiority of the New South Wales system. Bentham had a longstanding interest in the role of prisons in criminal justice, designing a "model prison" in which the inmates are under constant surveillance, which was influential in the design of the jail at Port Arthur in Tasmania.
