Philosophy by the Book

PUFENDORF, Samuel, Freiherr von (1632-1694)
De officio hominis et civis juxta legem naturalem, libro duo.
Ed.6
Cantabrigiae: typis academicis, 1701.

This work is the abridgement of Pufendorf's De jure naturae, 1672. Each is a major work of natural law theory which because of, or despite its far-reaching conclusions for the relationships between church, state and citizenship and its critical assimilation of the work of Hobbes, was marginalised for a long time. Unlike Hobbes, Pufendorf has only recently received the attention his work deserves.
