The Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations (BSES) Limited
The BSES Limited operates seven Sugar Experiment Stations and 10 Extension Centres in each of the major canegrowing districts and its head office is located in Brisbane. The BSES Limited is the Australian sugar industry's principal provider of research, development and extension. Included on the site is access to the 2000 annual report and to information sheets on pests/diseases, weeds, quarantine, land care and management of sugar cane (all in .pdf format). Access is also provided to media releases from 1999 onwards, a list of publications, information on BSES innovations and related links.
Industry Commission submission on the Australian sugar industry
This submission provides an overview of the Australian sugar industry focusing on regulatory arrangements applying in Queensland, statutory marketing of Queensland sugar and the tariff on raw and refined sugar. The submission was commissioned by the Queensland and Commonwealth Governments in 1995 and undertaken by the Sugar Industry Review Working Party. The findings and recommendations of the Industry Commission's 1992 report (now Productivity Commission) are outlined and developments since the report are reviewed and analysed.

It contains in depth information on the Australian sugar industry including a summary of the industry, agricultural aspects, milling, bulk handling, refining, world trade, export and domestic marketing, government involvement and information on industry organisations. Also included is information on research and development, nutrition, history, statistics, a glossary of terms and an appendix containing industry addresses.

The site provides access to subscription services such as the sugar trading system, live online sugar stream prices and specialist reports covering sugar issues in the US, Mexico, China, Thailand and Russia. Market & technical analysis and bulk and container freight indications are also available. Access, via email registration, is provided to free services such as the futures markets prices/charts supplied by Future Source/Bridge, the Dow Jones Sugar Market News, links to global websites and access to abstracts from the Sugaronline journal via a search facility some full-text articles are available online.

This report discusses multilateral trade liberalisation of the world's sugar markets and the effect this would have on developed countries by using the Global Sweetener Markets Model produced by CSR Australia.
