How to research effectively
Finding articles on your topic
Choosing a database
To make it easier for you to choose a database we have provided a list of databases for particular topics. There is a specific list for English Literature and Language Databases [Go to the list]
Once you have chosen the database that you wish to search, you need to implement your search strategy. Remember back to the module "Developing a Search Strategy ". This involves constructing a search statement.
To effectively search a database you need to become familiar with its interface (the search software that lets you find what you are looking for). You also need to know how to express your search request. Always check the online help or FAQ.
MLA - Modern Languages Association International Bibliography
MLA uses the OVID search interface. If you are unsure how you to search ask your Subject Librarian.
Basic OVID search techniques - use AND, OR, ( ) to nest phrases, $ for truncation, # as substitute for one letter (wom#n to retrieve woman or women.) A phrase is written as words next to each other in your search statement (English Patient).
