INTRODUCTION

This document is a supplement to the International Governmental Organizations Internet Guide.

This guide lists a selection of the publications of intergovernmental organisations held in the University of Sydney Library. Comprehensive holdings of documents, general guides to the organisations and indexes to their publications, and items
of special interest such as statistics, are included.

The library holds many serial titles and monographic works issued by the organisations, which can be found in the library's catalogues.

This guide mainly refers to items located in the Fisher Library (such as Microform, Audiovisual, Reference, Rare Books) unless otherwise indicated.

4.3.1 - Council of Europe

The Statute of the Council of Europe, which came into force in 1949, set up two organs: an inter-governmental Committee of Foreign Ministers with powers of decision and recommendation to governments, and a Parliamentary Assembly which consists of parliamentarians elected or appointed by their national parliaments. The European Convention on Human Rights, signed in 1950, set up machinery to investigate complaints and refer them to the European Court of Human Rights.

4.3.2 - The European Union

The three communities:

  1. the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC),
  2. the European Economic Community (EEC or Common Market), and
  3. the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM),
whose executives were merged in 1967 to form a single Council and a single Commission, together now make up what is now known as the European Union (EU).

The institutional structure includes the Commission, the Council of Ministers, the European Parliament, the EC Court of Justice, the European Council, and a Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER).

At the beginning of 1984, the University of Sydney was designated a European Documentation Centre, and now receives most official publications of the Commission, the European Parliament, and the EC Court of Justice.
