Some suggestions for finding French journal articles
Browsing
One way of finding recent articles is to browse through the latest copies of journals such as le Nouvel observateur, l'Esprit and la Nouvelle revue française which are held in the Current Serials section (opposite the Information Desk) at the following locations; le Nouvel observateur 054 11, l'Esprit 054 23 and la Nouvelle revue française 054 31.Earlier volumes of these journals are held at the same numbers in the Research library.
Le Monde
Le MondeThe advantage of this site over browsing for articles is that it allows access to the archives of Le Monde. Most articles from the past week are free, earlier articles attract a charge. Access to this site is better through Internet Explorer than Netscape.
If you are particularly interested in articles from earlier editions of Le Monde the library holds back issues of the journal, from 1972, on microfilm in the Audio-visual collection at 074.36 8. An index of articles from Le Monde from 1988 is also in Audio-visual at 074.36 8 . Articles can be photocopied from the microfilm readers in the Audio-visual collection.
Factiva
FactivaFactiva provides access to major national and overseas newspapers, including Liberation, Le Monde, Le Figaro, La Tribune, Le Temps and news services such as Reuters and Agence France Presse. Coverage for French material is from mid June 1994.
There are two ways of finding French material in Factiva;
1 Limit by language - this will search the entire database and retrieve articles in the selected language. To limit to French, click on the language button and then choose (click once) French from the list of languages available. The database usually defaults to English, this can be removed by double clicking on it. Enter a search term and click search. A search can combine a number of terms, ie ( Chirac and Sarkozy and president). Such a search finds articles containing all the search terms. A search for (Chirac or Sarkozy) will find articles with either Chirac or Sarkozy. The or or and must be in English. The full text of the article will appear by clicking on the hypertext link.
2 Limit by source - this will narrow your search to selected papers. Click on the source button and then type in journal name i.e. Le Monde and press enter. A list of available publications from Le Monde will appear. Click on each title youd like to search and it will be added to the source list. Enter a search and click search.

Factiva will log out automatically after 5 minutes if there is no key board activity.
