Introduction
A citation may be defined as the action of quoting any words or written passage. The original source must be included when citing another work, both for academic scrutiny as well as legal requirements. Citations occur throughout the body of a work and as a list at the end of the work.
The Harvard Style
There are a number of reference styles available and in current use. One of the most widely accepted styles of citing references is the Harvard style.
The Harvard style is also referred to as the name-and-year system. Some journals use a numbering system but this is normally due to space limitations and is not acceptable for assignment or thesis work.

Citing a standard page
The following list is the Harvard standard way to cite from the web:
- Author's surname and initials or given name
- Year of creation of the page
- Comma
- Full title of the page or site
- Write the following words: [Online], Available:
- The full URL
- [The date of access]
- Full stop
For example: Sly, I. Lindsay (1998), Australian microbial resources, [Online], Available: http://www.biosci.uq.edu.au/micro/academic/sly/lsly.pdf [15/05/01].
Citing a page with no author
The following list is the Harvard standard way to cite from the web when there is no author details provided:
- Full title of the page or site
- Write the following words: [Online], Available:
- The full URL
- [The date of access]
- Full stop
For example: Educating America for the 21st century: Developing a strategic plan for educational leadership for Columbia University, 1993-2000 (Initial workshop draft) 1994 [Online], Available: http://www.ilt.columbia.edu/CONF/ EdPlan.html [16/05/2001].
Citing a page with no date
The following list is the Harvard standard way to cite from the web when there is no date details provided:
