Introduction

A citation may be defined as the action of quoting any words or written passage. The original source must be included when citing another work, both for academic scrutiny as well as legal requirements. Citations occur throughout the body of a work and as a list at the end of the work.

The Harvard Style

There are a number of reference styles available and in current use. One of the most widely accepted styles of citing references is the Harvard style.

The Harvard style is also referred to as the name-and-year system. Some journals use a numbering system but this is normally due to space limitations and is not acceptable for assignment or thesis work.
