Databases
HazDat Database
HazDat is the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's Hazardous Substance Release/Health Effects Database. This U.S. site was developed to provide access to information on the release of hazardous substances from Superfund sites or from emergency events. Information included: site characteristics, contaminants found, concentration levels, and community health concerns.
TOXNET
A cluster of databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related areas.
Toxicology Data (Factual information)
HSDB Hazardous Substances Data Bank - Broad scope in human and animal toxicity, safety and handling, environmental fate, and more. Scientifically peer-reviewed.
IRIS Integrated Risk Information System - data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in support of human health risk assessment, focusing on hazard identification and dose-response assessment.
CCRIS Chemical Carcinogenesis Research Information System - carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, tumor promotion, and tumor inhibition data provided by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
GENE-TOX GENE-TOX - Peer-reviewed mutagenicity test data from the EPA.
Toxicology Literature (Scientific studies, reports)
TOXLINE Extensive array of references to literature on biochemical, pharmacological, physiological, and toxicological effects of drugs and other chemicals.
EMIC Environmental Mutagen Information Center - Current and older literature on agents tested for genotoxic activity.
DART/ETIC Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology and Environmental Teratology Information Center - Current and older literature on developmental and reproductive toxicology.
Toxic Release Information
TRI Toxics Release Inventory - reporting years 1995 - 1997.
Chemical Information
ChemIDplus Numerous chemical synonyms, structures, regulatory list information, and links to other databases containing information about the chemicals.
HSDB Structures 2D structural information on the HSDB chemicals.
NCI-3D 2D and 3D information compiled by the National Cancer Institute, and augmented by MDL.
Government sites
Department of Environment and Heritage
The Department's Atmosphere site includes topics such as air quality, air toxics, global warming and climate change, grant programs and funding, indoor air, and ozone protection.
Department of Health and Aged Care. Environmental Health
The Environmental Health Section provides advice on environmental health matters to the Minister for Health and Aged Care and a wide range of Commonwealth, State and Territory agencies, industry and the general community. In collaboration, it develops environmental health policy and facilitates the publication of advisory papers on a broad range of environmental health issues. The Environmental Health Section also provides secretariat services for the Health Council.
EPA Victoria
Environmental Information on Air, Land and Groundwater, Litter, Noise, Waste, Water.
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. National Center for Environmental Health
The NCEH is working to prevent illness, disability, and death from interactions between people and the environment. Main activities of the NCEH includes Public health surveillance, communication and education, prevention programs including behavioral interventions, global health, and the production of environmental health standards, guidelines, and recommendations. NCEH Health Topics covered include: air pollution and health, birth defects and pediatric genetics, chemical agent exposure limits, environmental hazards and health effects and many others.
U.S. NLM Environmental Health and Toxicology
Includes access to TOXNET Databases, Chemical Information, Tutorials and Special Topics.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Laws and regulations, programs, clearinghouses and publications. EMCI Chemical References for a listing of chemicals that are monitored by EPA's Major Program Systems: Air (AFS), Water (PCS), Hazardous Waste (RCRIS), Superfund (CERCLIS) and Toxics Release Inventory (TRIS).
U.S. NIH National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
The NIEHS aims to reduce the burden of human illness and dysfunction from environmental causes by understanding how environmental factors, individual susceptibility and age interrelate.
Index of health topics. This listing consists of information on a variety of environmental health topics, including answers to some common environmental questions. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences conducts basic research on environmental health and environment-related diseases.
Factsheets and pamphlets including: Asthma and its Environmental Triggers,
Breast Cancer Susceptibility and the Environment, Lead - The #1 Environmental Hazard to Many Children, Parkinson's Disease Research at the NIEHS, and Womens' Health and the Environment.
Research Initiatives such as herbal medicines, nutrition, children's health - pesticide residues in food, and Juvenile Diabetes.
Educational sites
U.S. NLM Toxicology Tutorials
The tutorials are intended to provide basic understanding of toxicology as an aid for users of toxicology literature contained in the National Library of Medicine's Chemical and Toxicological databases. Tutorial 1 is an introduction to the basic principles of toxicology, Tutorial 2 covers toxicokinetics, and Tutorial 3 discusses the cellular effects of biochemistry.
