Searching Compendex

Open database

Compendex, also known as Ei Compendex, is a comprehensive interdisciplinary engineering database, and can be searched from 1884 up to the present. Access to full text is available for some articles. Go to Databases for Project Management, find Compendex on the list and click on the name. Deselect GEOBASE by clicking the square box at the top if you only want to search Compendex.

Search

Enter your search words into the text boxes. Follow the example below, using the drop boxes to select AND, OR, NOT. For more information, go back to the previous part of this tutorial, or use the help pages in Compendex. Use the Limit features if required, for example document type: journal article, treatment type: general review, language: English. Then set the date limits and click the Search button.

Edit, refine, focus your search

Take a brief look at the results. Do the titles look relevant? Are there too many, or too few (see top of screen for the number of results)? You may need to edit your search. Click Refine Search at the top. Check your spelling. If you did not find enough, you could truncate your search term/s, for instance sustainab* will find more results than sustainability. If you found too many, consider adding extra search terms, combining with and.
